Cluster Types by the Level of Self-determined Solitude and Loneliness in Elderly: Group Differences in Emotional Regulation and Satisfaction with Life

Abstract

|
This study aimed to classify clusters of the elderly in terms of dimension self-determined solitude and loneliness and examine differences in cognitive emotion regulation and satisfaction with life across clusters. A total of 315 elderly completed the Self-determined Motivation for Solitude scale(SDS), the Rivised UCLA Loneliness Scale(RULS), Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire(CERQ), Satisfaction With Life Scale(SWLS). The data were used for cluster analysis, ANOVA, and post-hoc verification. The finding of the analysis yielded four clusters: ¡®sociable group¡¯ with low solitude and loneliness, ¡®loneliness group¡¯ with low solitude and high loneliness, ¡®voluntary solitude group¡¯ with high solitude and low loneliness, and ¡®aversive solitude group¡¯ with high solitude and loneliness, These groups showed significant differences in cognitive emotion regulation and satisfaction with life across clusters. Implications and limitations, and suggestions for future studies were presented.
